BIRTH of VENUS
Share
Known as the 'Birth of Venus', the composition actually shows the goddess of love and beauty arriving on land, on the island of Cyprus, born from the sea spray and blown there by the winds, Zephyr and possibly Aura. The goddess stands on a giant scallop shell, as pure and perfect as a pearl. She is met by a young woman, sometimes identified as one of the Graces or the Hora of spring, who holds out a flower-covered cloak. Even the roses blown in by the wind serve as a reminder of spring. The subject of the painting, celebrating Venus as a symbol of love and beauty, may have been suggested by the poet Agnolo Poliziano.
Painted by Sandro Botticelli between 1482 and 1485, it was likely commissioned by a member of the Medici family.
